Rangers could receive bids in the region of £10-15 million for Alfredo Morelos this summer, Kris Commons writes in his Scottish Daily Mail column.
The lowdown
Morelos is now into the final 18 months of his contract with the Ibrox outfit.
If Rangers can’t agree a new deal with the striker, this summer represents their last opportunity to cash in before he’s able to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs in January 2023.
The Daily Record’s Scott Burns has revealed that the 25-year-old has changed agents, potentially with a view to facilitating a big move.
Morelos has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 13 Scottish Premiership appearances since the start of December, compared to four goals and three assists in the previous 13 (via Transfermarkt).
He’s also produced some big moments in the UEFA Europa League, netting in the 4-2 victory away at Dortmund last month and in the recent 3-0 home win against Red Star Belgrade.
The latest
Commons sees similarities between Morelos’ situation and that of former Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard last year.
He says Morelos’ improved form, putting him ‘firmly back into the shop window’, could prove to be lucrative for Rangers.
Although, he thinks the Colombian might consider ‘sticking around’ if Champions League football is on offer at Ibrox next season.
“Maybe somewhere around the £10m-15m bracket,” he said (via Ibrox News). “With just 12 months left to go on his contract last summer, Odsonne Edouard was in the same position and Celtic sold him for £14m.
“That’s the sort of money Rangers could be looking at if Morelos maintains this form, which is a hell of a lot more than they looked like they would get for him just a few months ago.
“He might even commit himself to a new deal if he feels like sticking around at Ibrox under Van Bronckhorst. Winning the title and getting into the Champions League will be key to that.
“But there’s no doubt he has put himself firmly back into the shop window with some of his recent performances.”
The verdict
If Rangers receive a fee towards the upper end of Commons’ scale, then Morelos’ sale could be the biggest in their history.
The record currently stands at the initial £12.6million they received from Everton for right-back Nathan Patterson in January.
It would certainly be fitting given that Morelos is the club’s record scorer in European competition and has averaged more than one goal every two games (113 in 222) since he arrived five years ago.
In other news, Jordan Campbell picked out this man for praise.
